Wash the yellow split peas under running water until water runs clear. Transfer to a pan with boiling water and simmer until cooked (45 mins).
Fry off onions for 10 minutes in oil, then add garlic, ginger, whole spices and powdered spices.
Once the yellow split peas have simmered for 45 minutes, add the fried off onions and spices. Stir well.
Pour in water and then simmer for 10 minutes. Season with garam masala and salt. Serve with naan bread.
