Homemade curry powder substitute

The best substitutes for curry powder is to make your own curry powder! Here is a simple recipe that uses standard ground spices that are often found in household cupboards.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons ground coriander
  • 3 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons ground turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine all of the spices until well mixed.
    3 tablespoons ground coriander, 3 tablespoons ground cumin, 2 tablespoons ground turmeric, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, ½ teaspoon ground cardamom, ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Transfer the spice mixture to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Use as needed in recipes calling for curry powder.

Notes

This recipe yields approximately ⅔ cup of curry powder. Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper based on your desired level of spiciness. Alternatively use chili powder instead of cayenne.
